Starfish Story - one person CAN make a difference

I really like the Starfish story. The original story was written about a boy, but you get the idea from the video. Even though you may not be able to make a difference to thousands, you can make a difference to one at a time. We can make a difference, by touching one person. You might make a difference in someone's life without ever knowing it. You may have inspired that student that was going to give up, you may have made that lady's day when you let her go in front of you in the grocery line. You may have given hope to that older woman you chatted with at the bus stop, you may have been a sparkling hope to that depressed man that you smiled at while crossing the street. You can make a difference by your interactions with others each day. The little things make a difference...just like the child who began throwing the starfish back into the ocean.

The Starfish Story
Original Story by: Loren Eisley

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed
a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?”

The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean.
The surf is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them back, they’ll die.”

“Son,” the man said, “don’t you realize there are miles and miles of beach and hundreds of starfish? You can’t make a difference!”

After listening politely, the boy bent down, picked up another starfish,
and threw it back into the surf. Then, smiling at the man, he said…”
I made a difference for that one.”
