The Real Santa Claus

Christmas has transformed into both a religious holiday and a worldwide cultural and commercial phenomenon. Have you wondered how Santa Claus became a part of Christmas traditions?

There was a real Santa Claus (ST. Nicholas) long ago. Nicholas became a bishop sometime around 280 A.D. in Patara, near Myra in modern-day Turkey. He was a kind and genrous young man. He inherited a fortune which he used to help people in need.

He wore a long red robe and a red hat and travelled on horseback to neighboring villages. He would travel to nearby villages helping the families and their children. Children would see him coming and come to greet him.

In one village, bishop Nicholas heard about a man who had fallen on hard times. He had three daughters and didn't have money for a dowry so that they could get married.

One night, Nicholas crept up to the home where the family lived. He secretly tossed bags of gold down the chimney. Earlier that day, the three sisters had hung their newly washed stockings by the fireplace to dry. One bag of gold that Nicholas dropped fell into one of the stockings below.

As the story of these three sisters spread from village to village, other people began to hang their stockings by the fire, hoping to find a secret gift when they awoke the next morning. People all over the world began to celebrate, hanging stockings by the fire and waking to find them filled with candy, fruit, nuts or toys.

The American name for him, Santa Claus, comes from the Dutch pronounciation of St. Nicholas which is Sinterklaas. Santa became a modified version of the Famous Nicolas of Myra. In 1823, his appearance and mannerisms changed to become today's Santa Claus, made famous by the poem, "The Night Before Christmas." written by Clement Clarke Moore. Later still, the beverage company, Coca-Cola hired an artist to depict a Santa Claus drinking coca-cola. They insisted that he be fashioned wearing a Bright Red (Coca-cola color) suit.

So, although there is no more Santa Claus, there was a real Santa Claus long ago. Many people choose to continue to celebrate Santa and the "Christmas Spirit." Whatever you choose, please don't forget the real reason for the season. We are celebrating the Birth of our Saviour, Jesus.

The "Stuff of Christmas"

Everyday I seem to have lots of great blog ideas floating around. It's taking the time to set them to print on the screen that matters. Merry Christmas to everyone.

Here it is the week of Christmas - just a few days before. What great things do you find yourself doing during the Christmas season? Do you have some fun family traditions?

Ever notice how stressed people seems at Christmas? Christmas is supposed to be "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year." as the song declares. It's easy to get so caught up doing the "stuff" of Christmas that it's easy to forget why we celebrate.

I love the Christmas parties, buying or making gifts for family and friends that I know they will love. I love the decorating, Christmas caroling, Christmas programs, the lights, the Christmas dinner, the visiting that goes on and all the other things that Christmas brings. In the hustle and bustle, don't forget that Christmas is the time when we celebrate Jesus coming to earth. He came as a baby, to grow up to be a man without sin and to save the world from sin through his death on the cross. Here are some meanings to the "stuff" of Christmas.

The lights represent Jesus as the light of the world

The Angel on the tree (or the star) represent the angels that came to the shepherds and the star represents the star that the wisemen followed to his birthplace.

The presents represent the gifts that were given to Jesus

Candles symbolize that Christ is the light of the World

The Holly symbolizes the Crown of Thorns that Jesus wore at his death on the cross

The Christmas Tree symbolizes life.

And - last but not least, the colors of Christmas.

Red - Christ's blood shed for our sin.

Green - We have eternal life in Christ.

White - The purity of Christ.

Gold - The Kingship and Royalty of Christ

So there you have it. So, no matter what traditions you practice at this time of year, remember to celebrate the reason for the season - Jesus!

The Price of Children

Have you ever really wondered the cost of raising children today? A creative or very inquisitive person took time to count the cost of raising children. This is the author unknown article:

Faith

I attended a meeting today where Gloria Copeland was speaking. She was speaking on faith. She was touched on the account of David when he went up against Goliath. He had faith that God would be with him when he went up against the Giant. She was reminding everyone to speak words of faith. Our words have power not just when we are praying. You may have heard of the saying, "You have what you say." Well, it really is true. When something doesn't happen as you expect it to, don't complain that your prayers or your faith doesn't work. Not everything happens in the time line that we want it to. Keep speaking words of Faith and believing.

Stress Management

There are times when life can get hectic. How can we avoid getting stressed out? This lecture below explains how stress affects people and a summary of how to reduce stress on our lives.



A lecturer when explaining stress management to an audience,raised a glass of water and asked 'How heavy is this glass of water?' Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied, 'The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it.

If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem.
If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm.
If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance.

In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.' He continued, 'And that's the way it is with stress management.
If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, As the burden becomes increasingly heavy, We won't be able to carry on.'

'As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.'

'So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don't carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you're carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can.' Put down anything that may be a burden to you right now. Don't pick it up again until after you've rested a while.

Here are some great ways of dealing with the stress of life:

* Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.

* Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.

* Always keep your words soft and sweet, Just in case you have to eat them.

* If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

* If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably worth it.

* It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to be kind to others.

* Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time because then you won't have a leg to stand on.

* The second mouse gets the cheese.

* You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person.

*A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

* We could learn a lot from crayons... Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colors, but they all have to live in the same box.

Twinkies and a Root Beer

I received this one in my email box. I thought it was cute.

A little boy wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his suitcase with Twinkies and a six-pack of Root Beer and he started his journey.

When he had gone about three blocks, he met an elderly man. The man was sitting in the park just feeding some pigeons.

The boy sat down next to him and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed that the man looked hungry, so he offered him a Twinkie.

The man gratefully accepted it and smiled at boy. His smile was so pleasant that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered him a root beer.

Again, the man smiled at him. The boy was delighted! They sat there all afternoon eating and smiling, but they never said a word.

As it grew dark, the boy realized how tired he was and he got up to leave, but before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the man, and gave him a hug. The man gave him his biggest smile ever.

When the boy opened the door to his own house a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, "What did you do today that made you so happy?

"He replied, "I had lunch with God." But before his mother could respond, he added, "You know what? God's got the most beautiful smile I've ever seen."

Meanwhile, the elderly man, also radiant with joy, returned to his home. His son was stunned by the look of peace on his face and he asked," Dad, what did you do today that made you so happy?"

He replied, "I ate Twinkies in the park with God." However, before his son responded, he added," You know, he's much younger than I expected."

Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around. People come into our lives for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Embrace all equally!

The Story

The following story is Author Unknown

After a few of the usual Sunday evening hymns, the church's Pastor slowly stood up, walked over to the pulpit and, before he gave his sermon for the evening, briefly introduced a guest Minister who was in the service that evening. In the introduction, the Pastor told the congregation that the guest Minister was one of his dearest childhood friends and that he wanted him to have a few moments to greet the church and share whatever he felt would be appropriate for the service. With that, the elderly gentleman stepped up to the pulpit and began to speak.

"A father, and his son, and a friend of his son were sailing off the Pacific coast," he began... "when a fast storm blocked any attempt to get back to the shore. The waves were so high, even though the father was an experienced sailor, he could not keep the boat upright and the three were swept into the ocean as the boat capsized."

The old man hesitated for a moment, making eye contact with two teenagers who were, for the first time since the service began, looking somewhat interested in his story. The aged minister continued with his story...

"Grabbing a rescue line, the father had to make the most excruciating decision of his life: to which boy would he throw the end of the life line? He had only seconds to make the decision. The father knew that his son was a Christian and he also knew that his son's friend was not. The agony of his decision could not be matched by the torrent of waves.

As the father yelled out 'I Love You, Son!' he threw out the life line to his son's friend. By the time the father had pulled the friend back to the capsized boat his son had disappeared beneath the raging swells into the black night. His body was never recovered," the old man said sadly.

By this time, the two teenagers were sitting up straight in the pew, anxiously waiting for the next words to come out of the old Minister's mouth.

"The father," he continued, "knew his son would step into eternity with Jesus and he could not bear the thought of his son's friend stepping into an eternity without Jesus. Therefore, he sacrificed is son to save the son's friend. How great is the love of God that he should do the same for us? Our Heavenly Father sacrificed His only begotten Son so that we could be saved. I urge you to accept His offer to rescue you and take hold of the life line He is throwing out to you in this service."

With that, the old man turned and sat back down in his chair as silence filled the room. The Pastor again walked slowly to the pulpit and delivered a brief sermon with an invitation at the end. However, no one responded to the appeal. But, within moments after the service ended, the two boys were at the old man's side.

"That was a nice story," politely stated one of the boys, "but, I don't think it was very realistic for a father to give up his only son's life in hopes that the other would become a Christian."

"Well, you've got a point there," the old man replied, glancing down at his worn Bible. As a big smile broadened his narrow face, he looked up again at the boys and said, "It sure isn't very realistic, is it? But, I'm here today to tell you this story gives me a glimpse of what it must have been like for God to give up His only Son for me. You see... I was that father, and your Pastor is my son's friend."

Positive Words

I was at a meeting today where the speaker was talking about negative self talk. The speaker was encouraging the audience to turn each negative into a positive. For example; "I only exercised once this week." Turn that into, "I exercised this week!" You can apply that to many things in life. Negative self talk only hurts you. Turn those words around to be a positive.

If my posts are lacking images this week, it's because my computer is in for repair. Yeah...I will have a good working computer. Voila - my negative is now a positive. Live with Passion!!

The U in Jesus

Here's a little author unknown poem that showed up in my email box. I like the way the author has used the "U" as "You" to make a point. It's all up to U.




The U in Jesus

Before U were thought of or time had begun,
God stuck U in the name of His Son.

And each time U pray, you'll see it's true,
You can't spell out JesUs and not include U.

You're a pretty big part of His wonderful name,
For U, He was born; that's why He came.

And His great love for U is the reason He died.
It even takes U to spell crUcified.

Isn't it thrilling and splendidly grand
He rose from the dead, with U in His plan?

The stones split away, the gold trUmpet blew,

When JesUs left earth at His upward ascension,
He felt there was one thing He just had to mention.

'Go into the world and tell them it's true

Don't they have a right to know JesUs too?

It all depends now on what U will do,
He'd like them to know,
But it all starts with U.

God's Gifts

"The gifts and calling of God are without repentance." This scripture is found in Romans 11:29. In other words, when God gives you a gift and a calling on your life, He doesn't take it back. Here's how it reads in the amplified version; "For God's gifts and His call are irrevocable. [He never withdraws them when once they are given, and He does not change His mind about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends His call.]" So, even if you are not walking in your calling right now or and not using your gifts, God doesn't take them away from you. Even if you have walked away from God, His grace is available for you. You can walk right back to God and He will accept us. You can walk back into the calling that God has for you and walk into your purpose in life.

Fear

There are some very unusual phobias that people have. Many of these fears either stem from some childhood incident of simply a non-real fear in their head. Fear as the dictionary describes it is as a feeling of agitation and anxiety caused by the presence or imminence of danger. (dictionary.com) Many of these fears are only perceived threats or danger. Did you know that the fear of failure even has a name? Atychiphobia- Fear of failure. There is even a fear of computers!! Logizomechanophobia- Fear of computers. As Christians, we have the power over fears that come up in our lives. Notice that we can put a name to these fears. The name of Jesus is above every name. Even the names of fears that try to hold us captive.

Ablutophobia- Fear of washing or bathing.
Acarophobia- Fear of itching or of the insects that cause itching.
Acerophobia- Fear of sourness.
Achluophobia- Fear of darkness.
Acousticophobia- Fear of noise.
Acrophobia- Fear of heights.
Aerophobia- Fear of drafts, air swallowing, or airborne noxious substances.
Aeroacrophobia- Fear of open high places.
Aeronausiphobia- Fear of vomiting secondary to airsickness.
Agateophobia- Fear of insanity.
Agliophobia- Fear of pain.

18 Things We Can Learn From a Dog

It's amazing how much joy a dog will get out of life. There is alot that we can learn from furry companions. Only if we could view life with as much joy as a dog. Here are 18 things that we can learn from a dog - if you don't own a dog, just observe the neighbors dog.

1. Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

2. Allow the experience of fresh air and wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

Kept by God

Everyone gets those days when things just aren't turning out right. What good does it do to mope, complain or get angry about it. That doesn't do any good! That is really when we should be turning to God for his help and wisdom on the situation. (I hope that's not the only time we turn to him)
God has definitely given me strength, wisdom, endurance, financial means and many other things in a time of need. I can recount many times in my life where things would have turned out so different if I hadn't called on God in my time of need. I could be hopeless and disheartened. Instead, I am hopeful and lighthearted.

I just received the following little poem into my email box:

Enjoy the day with your family and friends and celebrating the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I still enjoy the Easter Chocolate and egg hunts, but I always make sure that I remember the reason that Easter came about. Jesus died and was buried in a tomb, he rose again on the third day. The purpose of his dying on the cross was to take away the sins of mankind. John 3:16 says, For God so loved the World that He gave his only Son that who ever believes on Him should have everlasting life."

Jesus on the baseball field

Did you know that the Colorado Rockies Baseball Team have a "Faith Day"? Many of the players are Christians who share their faith at this event. It's a promotion targeted at the Christian population. Tickets are discounted for Church groups. During the post-game show, christian bands are featured. This is also when players get to talk about their faith in God. I think it's great to see major league teams "step up to the plate" with regards to their beliefs.

Beautiful LIfe

I have been nearly absent from the internet for days at a time while slaying viruses on my system. It looks like it will be a full re-install to rid of the trojans that enjoy a free ride in my system folders. It's been one of those interesting weeks that has me turning to good music to brighten my spirits.
I really like the song, Beautiful Life from Fisher. The first time I heard it was on a commercial for John and Kate Plus 8. Now, I have the favorite song on my ipod to listen to at will. Here it is the song on Youtube:

Something Missing?

I was listening to the radio in my vehicle the other day. There was a talk show on my regular station and I felt like listening to music. So, I flipped it over to the country station. As a new song was playing that I had not heard before, I listened intently to the words of the song. The lines that caught my attention were, "If your world's got something missing, put a girl in it." Now while that line sounds fine in the context of a country song, the words sounded hollow to me. I thought, what about God? If your world is missing something, put God in it. So, when the line came on again, I sang "put God in it".

The Glass is Half Full

It's like looking at the glass as half full instead of half empty. Instead of seeing the negative, choose to see the positive. There's another way you can use this as well. Not only is this philosophy good for looking at the things in the present, but also the past. I believe that God can turn around bad situations so that something good can come out of it. If you are bothered by some of the bad situations you have had, perhaps you can see a ray of light in it. For example, maybe you were fired from a job, but this enabled you to get a much better job opportunity. It's often not apparent to you while in a rough situation, but after the dust settles, so to speak, see the good that can come out of it. Try to see the the positive side of things.

Kitty from heaven

Here's not only a humourous story, but it's inspirational as well. It just shows how creative God can be. hahaha. What are you believing God for?


The pastor of a church had a mischievous kitten. One morning, the kitten climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The pastor coaxed, offered warm milk, etc.

The kitty would not come down. The tree was not sturdy enough to climb, so the pastor decided that if he tied a rope to his car and drove away so that the tree bent down, he could then reach up and get the kitten.
That`s what he did, all the while checking his progress in the car. He then figured if he went just a little bit further, the tree would bend sufficiently for him to reach the kitten. But as he moved the car a little further forward, the rope broke. The tree went "bong!" and the kitten instantly sailed through the air-out of sight.

The pastor felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they`d seen a little kitten. No. Nobody had seen a stray kitten. So he prayed, "Lord, I just commit this kitten to your keeping," and went on about his business. A few days later, he was at the grocery store and met one of his church members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. This woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it. So he asked her, "Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?"

She replied, "You won`t believe this," and then told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days earlier, the child began to beg again. The Mom finally told her little girl, "Well, if God gives you a cat, I`ll let you keep it."

She told the pastor, "I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat. And really, Pastor, you won`t believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. A kitten suddenly came flying out of the blue sky, with its paws outspread, and landed right in front of her."

Giving Blood to save his sister

This author unknown email was sent to me. It just shows how much the little brother loved his sister.

Many years ago, a doctor working at Stanford Hospital got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies, needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for only a moment before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes, I'll do it if it will save Liz."

As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheeks. Then his face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "When will it happen?"

"When will what happen?" Asked the doctor.

"Will I start to die right away?" Asked the boy.

Being young, you see, the boy had misunderstood the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood.

Template Generator

Internet life (anything on the computer for that matter) can be a frustrating thing when dealing with viruses. It's pretty bad when blogger, facebook and amazon won't load properly! I just need to back it all up and do a re-install.

Speaking of internet life - and stuff on the internet. I found a great template generator to make your own template. Well - I know of a couple actually-but here's a favorite. You pick a template and then customize it to your liking. They are professional enough to use on a business site. All the templates here use stylesheets (CSS). I just looked up a simple CSS tutorial to find out how to use them.

Just Relax

It's amazing how busy people can get. Just this week, I have been incredibly busy with absolutely everything. I also was contending with viruses on my computer among other things. It's easy to get so frustrated and busy that we get wound up and anxious.

If you are having one of those incredibly busy and frustrating days, take a breather. Just relax and let God rejuvenate you.

A Jug of Milk

Some of those email forwards are just plain annoying. Some of them are really funny jokes. Every now and then, a great inspirational or moving story shows up in my inbox. Here is one of those such stories.


A young man had been to Wednesday Night Bible Study. The Pastor had shared about listening to God and obeying the Lord's voice. The young man couldn't help but wonder, 'Does God still speak to people?'

After service, he went out with some friends for coffee and pie and they discussed the message. Several different ones talked about how God had led them in different ways.

It was about ten o'clock when the young man started driving home. Sitting in his car, he just began to pray, 'God...If you still speak to people, speak to me. I will listen. I will do my best to obey.'

As he drove down the main street of his town, he had the strangest thought to stop and buy a jug of milk. He shook his head and said out loud, 'God is that you?' He didn't get a reply and started on toward home. But again, the thought, buy a jug of milk.

The young man thought about Samuel and how he didn't recognize the voice of God, and how little Samuel ran to Eli. 'Okay, God, in case that is you, I will buy the milk.' It didn't seem like too hard a test of obedience. He could always use the milk. He stopped and purchased the jug of milk and started off toward home.

As he passed Seventh Street, he again felt the urge, 'Turn Down that street.' This is crazy he thought, and drove on past the intersection. Again, he felt that he should turn down Seventh Street . At the next intersection, he turned back and headed down Seventh. Half jokingly, he said out loud, 'Okay, God, I will.'

He drove several blocks, when suddenly, he felt like he should stop He pulled over to the curb and looked around. He was in a semi- commercial area of town. It wasn't the best but it wasn't the worst of neighborhoods either. The businesses were closed and most of the houses looked dark like the people were already in bed.

Again, he sensed something, 'Go and give the milk to the people in the house across the street.' The young man looked at the house. It was dark and it looked like the people were either gone or they were already asleep. He started to open the door and then sat back in the car seat.

'Lord, this is insane. Those people are asleep and if I wake them up, they are going
to be mad and I will look stupid.' Again, he felt like he should go and give the milk.

Finally, he opened the door, 'Okay God, if this is you, I will go to the door and I will give them the milk. If you want me to look like a crazy person, okay. I want to be obedient. I guess that will count for something, but if they don't answer right away, I am out of here.'

He walked across the street and rang the bell. He could hear some noise inside. A man's voice yelled out, 'Who is it? What do you want?' Then the door opened before the young man could get away.

The man was standing there in his jeans and T-shirt. He looked like he just got out of bed. He had a strange look on his face and he didn't seem too happy to have some stranger standing on his doorstep. 'What is it?'

The young man thrust out the jug of milk, 'Here, I brought this to you.' The man took the milk and rushed down a hallway. Then from down the hall came a woman carrying the milk toward the kitchen. The man was following her holding a baby. The baby was crying. The man had tears streaming down his face. The man began speaking and half crying, 'We were just praying. We had some big bills this month and we ran out of money. We didn't have any milk for our baby. I was just praying and asking God to show me how to get some milk.'

His wife in the kitchen yelled out, 'I asked him to send an Angel with some milk. Are you an Angel?'

The young man reached into his wallet and pulled out all the money he had on him and put in the man's hand. He turned and walked back toward his car and the tears were streaming down his face.

He knew that God still answers prayers.

Live Out Loud

Whenever I am driving, I always have on music. Sometimes it's the radio. Although, more often than not, it's my ipod plugged into the vehicle. I really love music. It's something that inspires me. One of my favorite singers is Stephen Curtis Chapman. The song, "Live Out Loud" came on and I turned it up. I am sure the other drivers were wondering about me as I bopped to the song. It's a great catchy song that talks about just what the title says, Living Out Loud. Meaning - We've been given the gift of life. We should be living and enjoying the life that our creator, God gave to us. Not only that, but we should be telling others about God's love. So, get excited, enjoy life, play some great tunes and tell others about God's love.
